Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR Review

Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR Review Tube. Duration : 6.73 Mins.

For the complete Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR review, go to www.infosyncworld.com Fujifilm is back at it again with a new flagship Super Zoom digital camera, and we got a chance to flog it all day and night. The Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR is the successor to last year's Finepix HS10—a camera that left us with conflicted emotions. The pomp and circumstance engulfing the new Fujifim Finepix HS20 EXR is its—yes, you guessed it—brand new 16-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor. That means we get Fujifilm's EXR shooting technology merged with a Backside Illuminated Sensor, and image and video quality becomes the hot topic of this review. Not only did Fujifilm cram a new sensor into the Finepix HS20 EXR, but the camera now offers SDXC card support, a higher 12800 ISO cap, and more pixels in the LCD. That's about it, compared to last year's Finepix HS10. Therefore, Fujifilm did not improve upon our suggestions riddled throughout the Finepix HS10 review, so many of our shooting-oriented gripes were relived yet a second time. The Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR is an odd duck, so take a leap into the pond, shall we?

Taking Sport Photographs - Digital Camera Tips

Taking sport photographs is not difficult at all and can make for some really nice pictures. If you are really into sports and highly enjoy watching the games or even participating in them it can be very fun and rewarding to take sports photos.

First off, taking sport photos isn't the same as the way that enthusiastic parent is taking pictures of his or her kids. Sport photos that look good are not simply pointed at the action and taken. If you take a look at most, you'll see how they end up very different looking from most sport photos regular point and shooters take.

Sports photography can be somewhat difficult especially if you don't know how to do it or have a slow eye. Most sports are very fast and have lots of movement. This, nevertheless, is easy to overcome and take really great photos. If you can learn how to flawlessly capture movement with your digital camera then you can take really great sports pictures.

When it comes to taking fast action photographs, whether they are sports photos or bird photos, there are some common tips to follow. These tips are NOT just for sports photos. You can use these tips for taking action photos of birds, lions, planes, etc.

One of the most important aspects of sports photos is the settings on your camera. If you've ever taken sports photos with a fully automatic camera you probably ended up deleting nearly half the photos. Shutter speed is a setting that is usually much manipulated with action sport photos. Another setting that is manipulated often with sports is the ISO setting.

Shutter Speed Manipulation

When you take pictures of any object in motion, the need to freeze the object or blur the object is fully made through the shutter speed. If you're taking speed motion pictures of sports you'll want to stop the motion and not have blurred subjects. This means you'll want a fast shutter speed. The shutter speed should be faster than the subjects motion. If you're taking a shot of a very fast object you'll need a much faster shutter speed than a slow moving object like a turtle.

ISO Settings

What happens when you use a faster shutter speed is that less light is let into the camera. This can be fine for somewhat faster shutter speeds, but faster speeds require some change in the ISO to allow more light exposure.

Taking sports photos indoors can provide many more challenges. Because the light is mostly artificial it'll be much harder to properly expose when manipulating shutter speeds. When taking sports photos at or above around four hundred ISO setting can be fine. Be careful when using ISO because using a very high number can make your image very noisy. Some noise is alright as you can easily remove a little noise in photo editing programs.

Besides the settings, equipment is also used for sports photos. Unless you're allowed to be on the field with the players and get close ups of them, you'll most likely be very far from the action. To get up close you'll need a high quality telephoto lens. The telephoto lens is what all professional sport photographers use and gets you to get really close and get great shots of the action.

What happens with such long telephoto lenses is that the background will get out of focus. A shallow depth of field is very common with sports pictures and even sports on television. If you watch the closer shots of individual players you'll notice how the background is very blurred.

What Kind of Camera Should My Wedding Photographer Use?

If you are in the process of looking for a wedding photographer, chances are you will soon hear the terms: medium format, 35mm, and digital. Those are the three primary types of camera systems currently used by wedding photographers. We, the wedding photographers, have argued amongst ourselves for years as to which camera system is best. I'll start by sharing with you about the different camera systems and will then give you my opinion of which camera system your wedding photographer should use.

Medium Format

For many years medium format has been the absolute best option. A medium format camera uses film that is 3 times the size of a 35mm negative-- resulting in higher resolution images and beautiful enlargements, however, the cameras and processing costs are very expensive.

Primary advantages: high resolution negatives. Previously, the fact that a person owned a Medium Format camera was almost, in and of itself, a sign that they were a true "wedding photographer" (due to the expense of the system).

Disadvantages: expensive to operate (film costs are so high that some wedding photography books encourage medium format photographers to limit the photos they take); film can be lost or damaged during processing; slower to focus and operate.

35mm

For many years 35mm has had a bad reputation for providing poor quality enlargements -- especially when compared to medium format. However, over the past 10 years the quality of 35mm film has improved tremendously. It is now a common format used by many professional photographers, especially those who use the photojournalistic style and shoot close to a thousand or more images on a wedding day.

Primary advantages to 35mm: fast (easy to quickly focus and shoot during), much improved quality of enlargements (many people would have a hard time telling the difference between a 35mm and medium format 8x10 enlargement).

Disadvantages: processing film is becoming more and more expensive, and film can be damaged or loss during processing. Many photographers that shoot film are now having the negatives scanned so that the files become a digital file.

Digital

Professional digital wedding photography has been a viable option since about the year 2000 (although some would argue that date). The quality of digital cameras has now reached a point where I now feel digital has surpassed the quality of medium format negatives. Keep in mind there is a broad variety of cameras, and a "professional" digital camera from 2004 that cost ,500 new will not capture the quality of images that a "pro-am" (a camera targeted to advanced amateurs and also professionals) from 2010 that costs ,000 will capture. "Digital camera" covers a massive spectrum of cameras and camera quality.

Primary digital advantages: instant review of images on the back of the camera; no film and processing costs (although the savings is offset by the additional computer time required to process the digital images); more control over the images (i.e., a slight rotation or cropping of an image is quick and easy with digital but requires a custom print from 35mm or medium format). Many digital cameras surpass the quality of even medium format.

Disadvantages: technology changes rapidly over time and cameras soon are outdated (although this doesn't necessarily effect you, as the consumer). Memory cards are easier to lose than rolls of film (if your wedding photographer uses a digital camera, ask them how they make sure the photos arrive safely back at the studio).

So, which camera system should my photographer use?

No matter what you have been told - all three formats are a viable method for wedding photography. Some might be more expensive than others, but they all CAN produce good results. The fact is that all three systems can result in poor-quality photos, too. Many photographers use several of the camera systems. Some might use medium format for the formals but 35mm for the reception and ceremony coverage. Others will primarily shoot digital, but might bring film cameras as backup equipment.

This is the key: before signing a contract with a photographer, ask to see sample enlargements that were taken with the same equipment that would be used at your wedding. If you like the quality and color of the images, it doesn't really matter whether 35mm, digital, or a medium format camera was used to record the image!

The Nikon D400 Camera - Most Anticipated Digital SLR in Years

The world of photography and cameras is a highly competitive market, where each purchase can amount to several thousand dollars. As a consumer, if you're going to be spending such a large chunk of money, you're going to want to research the best option. Sometimes, this means researching your purchase months before you actually make it. That is not just good for your photos but good for your pocketbook too. Lately though, the camera thousands of people have been looking into has not even been officially announced yet. This camera is the Nikon D400 digital SLR.

Digital Camera

Now why would a camera be so highly anticipated before it's even announced as being a possibility by the company that makes it? In this case, the speculation has gone rampant. The current camera model in the same line is the Nikon D300, which brought nothing short of amazement among those who use it. The D300 received stellar reviews from Nikon fanatics and critics alike, and became one of the best received cameras in recent history.

Those high reviews gave people high expectations for the next product in the same line, and started the speculation of a Nikon D400 only a year after the D300 was released. Nikon tends to release the next model within a line between two and three years after the release of the previous model. This adds fuel to the D400 rumors as the two year mark comes on 23 August 2009.

With that two year mark fast approaching, rumors surrounding the Nikon D400 are popping up like wildfire, and the speculation is coming from photographers and techies alike. Any fluctuation in the production of previous models gets quickly noticed, and thousands of avid Nikon watchers make posts on various related websites. Speculation and rumors on the specifications of the D400 range from being realistic but impressive, to completely out to lunch.

One thing everyone seems to agree on though is that after an amazing release in the form of the Nikon D300, there are very high expectations of the Nikon D400 camera. All Nikon fans and critics alike are going to be paying very close attention to the life cycle of this pending digital SLR. If Nikon can deliver on the D400 like they did on the D300 though, competitors like Canon, Kodak, and Pentax will all have a rough time claiming the market.

Super Mario Bros Theme Song Acapella Multitrack Tube. Duration : 1.53 Mins.

Multitrack of "Platforms a Plenty" from Super Mario Sunshine on the GameCube (the acapella Mario theme song in the warp/secret levels) This is my first time trying something like this, and despite a couple spots that aren't great, I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm a tenor, so although I was able to hit the high G5 (sitting just above the treble clef) that pops up a couple times, I had to cheat and use some digital magic to get down to the low C2 (a couple lines below the bass cleff). Filmed against my bedroom wall (which has Blik Mario decals on it) with my Canon point and shoot digital camera balanced on my bed (I broke my tripod earlier this year). Based on a MIDI (www.midishrine.com which I learned the parts from.

What is the Best Digital Camera Brand For 2009?

Picking the best camera brand is very hard, and is something that varies greatly. Some may say Canon, while others may say Kodak. It all depends on what the camera is being used for.

Technically, there is no best camera brand, and it really just comes down to individual preference. Nonetheless, there are quite a few brands that really do dominate in many ways. These brands include Olympus, Leica, Panasonic, Minolta, Fuji, Pentax, and Sony. As you can see, it is hard to pick just one brand, as there are many brands that are right up there as "the best camera brand".

As for quality, this may be a bit easier to rank. At the top would be Leica, followed by Panasonic, Minolta, Olympus, Yashica, Practika, Pentacon, Fuji, and Zeiss. There are several other brands, and just because they are not on this list does not mean they are bad brands. In fact, in this time there is really no such thing as "bad camera brand", but there are just certain brands that really shine.

Overall, many would say that the Leica could be the best if it was smaller. Many people do not like it because it is not one you can fit in your pocket. Though, it is said to be a great film and digital camera nonetheless. Olympus is probably one of the best digital SLR, and if you are willing top pay big bucks for lenses, then this is your best bet.

One thing that should be considered closely is what category camera you want as well. Some brands do not have good SLR cameras, while others may not have good ultra compact cameras. There are five categories, and before picking a specific brand you should definitely know which of these you will likely want. The categories include ultra compact (very small), compact (small), creative compact (a bit bigger than the compact cameras), SLR-like (larger), and the SLR (the largest). Some brands will not have good SLR cameras, so if you want a good SLR camera, some brands may not be an option for you. Generally, Sony caries ultra compact cameras, while Olympus is better known for SLR cameras. Picking a brand is not always something that someone can help you with. Often times people pick a camera on what they find is appealing. Try out some different cameras; see how you like their look, and their interface. It really comes down to individual preference over anything.

Nikon Coolpix P500 Review

Nikon Coolpix P500 Review Video Clips. Duration : 7.28 Mins.

For the complete Nikon Coolpix P500 review, go to www.infosyncworld.com Call it a Super, Mega, Ultra, Deluxe, Supreme, or Big Booming Zoom—the new Nikon Coolpix P500 continues the tradition of obscene zoom ranges with its 36x optical range, one of the largest magnifications available within the current compact camera circuit. This is a 10x optical leap from last year's Nikon Coolpix P100, but that's not the only primary upgrade on the P500. Nikon also spruced up the camera's external design, stuffed more pixels into the fold-out LCD, and introduced new EXPEED 2 processing for the camera's Backside Illuminated CMOS sensor. Other than that, the Nikon Coolpix P500 is not a major divergence from last year's P100, and that's why both price tags remain identical. But the big question centers around the Nikon Coolpix P500's image quality, now that the latest processing has been implemented. Is the Nikon Coolpix P500 a noble upgrade? Let's find out.

The Differences Between Kindle 2 and Nook - Which is Better?

Amazon's Kindle 2 and the Barnes and Noble Nook are the two main heavy-weights in the battle of the ebook readers this year. There are many similarities, and critical differences in the two. What are they, and which is the better digital ebook reader? Let's take a look.

E-Ink Display Screens- Both the Kindle 2 and the Nook use the same "E-Ink" technology for their display screen. Reading for hours on end on these eBook readers isn't like staring at a computer screen. The E-Ink screen displays the words just like (or even better than) looking at a real book.

The Nook, however, has an additional color navigation screen underneath the display screen. This touch screen allows you to scroll through titles of books, magazines, and other publications. There is also a touch keyboard display on this screen. No reviews are available yet for the screen performance, but consumers will soon tell all.

Wireless and 3G- Both the Kindle 2 and the Nook boast wireless capabilities. You are able to download books and other publications if you have access to a wireless network. If no wireless internet is available, then 3G cellular capabilities will allow you to download in that situation.

International Availability- Here is a major difference between the two ebook readers- International capabilities. The Kindle 2 boasts the ability to download books and full usage in over 100 countries, whereas the Nook is only fully functional in the US. Of course the Nook device will work in the sense you can still read books out of the country, but you cannot add more books or publications. This is obviously a very important point for international customers to take into account.

The Nook's Lending Capability- The Nook has the ability to let you lend out your books to others that have downloaded the Barnes and Noble software. You don't necessarily have to have a Nook to receive the lent books, just the software. One should know that lending time is only 2 weeks and the person who lends the book cannot use it during that time. A good feature? Customers will tell over time.

Storage Space- Both the Kindle and Nook have base memory of 2 GB, which is good for about 1,500 books, however the Nook allows for extra space to be added to increase the titles to upwards of 17,500. Is 2 Gigs enough? Well, read one book a day and you'll have 4 years of reading material!

Other Differences- The Kindle boasts a slightly lighter device, text-to-speech technology, and a web browsing capability, whereas the Nook doesn't.

One other notable difference is the Google Android software in the Nook. Barnes and Noble chose this software, banking on the development of applications by software developers that will work with the Nook. We'll have to see how the software performs and if there is an iPod like popularity in applications.

Canon Vs Nikon - Digital SLR Camera Comparison

It is imperative to understand the technology of DSLR cameras before contrasting the differences between to models.

Compare digital SLR cameras of Canon and Nikon

These are not just simple 'point and shoot' units. The DSLR, short for Digital Single Lens reflex gives users the ability to make the picture turn out the exact same as what is seen through the eye lens, or viewfinder.

In the 'point and shoot' units, the scene depicted in the viewfinder is not the same as what come through the primary lens. The viewfinder portion is not indicate of final product in traditional digital cameras. Therefore, in the DSLR cameras, the images are the same. Therefore, the photo taker will be able to take a picture that will turn out the same as what is seen through the viewfinder. This visualization makes picture taking much easier and more accurate.

There are three basic categories for both Canon and Nikon for SLR digital categories. Beginning with the amateur level machines, the Canon Rebel XS (1000D) and also the Nikon D60 fall into that category. There are many differences between the Rebel XS and Nikon D60. If you have older Canon lenses you want to use with it, the Nikon D60 will work with most of them; while the older Nikon lenses may not work with the Nikon D60.

The next category of these cameras is for more professional use. These are usually larger and more expensive. They require some expertise to use effectively. Cameras that fall into this category are the Canon Rebel T1i 500D as well as the Nikon D 5000. The Canon Rebel T1i and the D5000 are actually very similar in their capabilities; although the ISO range varies. The D5000 range is 100-6400 while the T1i has a larger range of 100-12800.

Finally, there is another category to compare digital SLR cameras. They fuse together several of the features from each of the previous categories. These can be used by amateur photographers who want to take more professional quality pictures. In this category, the Nikon D300 and Canon 50D would meet those needs. These are both really good cameras and are almost identical in their features. There are a few subtle differences; the Canon is actually lighter at 29 oz than the Nikon at 32.6 oz. Also, the ISO range is slightly different; the Canon ISO boasts 100-12800 where the Nikon range is 100-6400.

Army Men - Plastic Apocalypse

Army Men - Plastic Apocalypse Video Clips. Duration : 24.18 Mins.

The epic tale of Green and Tan army men battling it out in the dirt. Will the Green be able to make it through the perlious obstacle of adversity? Film maker's comments: I'm tired of getting comments like "How long did this take?" and "How many pictures did you take?" and "What program did you use?" So I'll tell you now. It was filmed using a Casio digital camera, I don't have any stopmotion equiptment. My friend Jesse (The Sergeant) and I filmed it on the side of my house during the summer of 2011. It was hot as hell and we were laying down in the dirt for weeks which sucked. It took about two months to shoot and then another two months to edit. I have no idea how many pictures we took but it was a shit load. I used Ulead video studio to edit the footage and add in the voices and sound effects. I then used Adobe After Effects to add in the muzzle flashes, explosions, dirt hits ect. This movie had absolutely no script, we were making the whole thing up as we went. When we recorded our voices, we were basically sitting there watching the footage while we improved into the mic. I got all the army men in a combo pack off ebay along with the tanks and canons. I built the bunkers and the guard towers myself out of balsa wood and dug the trenches myself with a ruler. We didn't really expect it to be as long as it is or have as much stuff as it does. We're pretty proud of it though. Glad we were actually able to get it done. Written and Driected by Michael Akkerman & Jesse ...

Palden Dorje's speech.wmv

Palden Dorje's speech.wmv Tube. Duration : 8.65 Mins.

Apologies, I filmed this badly, I was trying to pay attention to him and not the camera, and my hands shook terribly. I was biding my time as my real cameraman was taking proper footage whereas I just had my normal digital nikon camera. I hope there is nothing missing. At the end Palden Dorje complains to Karmal Lama about the sound, and Karmal Lama does a sound check. Palden Dorje repeated this speech ad verbatim three times because of disturbances. He thought it was more important that we hear the speech, than obeying protocol which requires a person to make a speech once, no matter what the disturbances. Many reporters mistook the meaning behind his actions.

How To Choose Your Motorcycle GPS System

A GPS system for your motorcycle can turn your journeys, into adventures. Opening up a whole new experience, you can find amazing places to explore by planning your trips at home, and downloading your routes to your GPS device. New landscapes, destinations, and road trips await; with the security and confidence of never getting lost again.

A GPS system for your motorcycle can also help to make your journeys as comfortable, and stress-free as possible. If you fancy a break, or you're running out of petrol, your GPS can help. More importantly, your GPS unit can guide you back to safety when you get lost, or accidentally take the wrong turning. With voice guided directions, and software brimming with points of interest (POI), such as petrol stations, restaurants, service stations, and hotels; your GPS can guarantee you a journey of uninterrupted enjoyment.

Sound like the perfect toy? Well, with GPS systems becoming mainstream, and new features and models endlessly hitting the shelves, it can be a hard task deciphering which GPS device best suits your needs.

To help you out, it's worth considering the following points before you go ahead and purchase your first GPS for your motorcycle.

What Type of GPS Do You Need For Your Motorcycle?

Are Its Reception Capabilities Suitable For Your Needs?

Does the Battery Life Of Your GPS Suit Your Needs?

How Resistant Is Your GPS To Vibration & Hard Ware?

Do You Want 2-Way-Communication?

How Easy Is Your GPS To Update?

How Easy Is Your GPS To Update?

What Price Is Suitable?

What Type of GPS Do You Need For Your Motorcycle?

There are 3 types of GPS units for motorbikes; portable outdoor units, GPS units designed specifically for your motorcycle/ scooter, and GPS/PDA hybrids.

If you also enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain biking, rambling, or even camping; a portable GPS that can be taken anywhere with you would be ideal. As well as navigating your off-road persuits, versatile Sat Nav's, like the Garmin Quest 2, operate in any vehicle. As well as motorcycling, you can take it in your car, on your boat, or even on a plane with you.

GPS devices designed exclusively for motorcycles can offer you some very impressive features. Especially designed with you, the motorcyclist, in mind, units like the TomTom RIDER have tough, weather-proof casing, touch-screen options for gloves, and anti-glare screens. One of the latest features introduced by TomTom for effective communication, is a system which transmits your spoken instructions via a built-in Bluetooth audio system, using a headset that sits inside your helmet.

The final type of GPS device that may appeal to you is the PDA/GPS hybrid. Although these devices have been designed primarily with portability in mind, most come with the added bonus of having a large screen. So, like the hand-held outdoor GPS units, this type of GPS would be ideal for those of you who enjoy a range of outdoor activities. With an integrated PDA on top of this, GPS/ PDA devices, like the Mio A201 for example, can be handy for work and play. With features like Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, you will be able to catch up on work anytime, anyplace. If you prefer to listen to music on the move, play games, or store digital photos, a GPS device like this one is an ideal choice

Does the Reception Capabilities of Your Motorcycle GPS Meet Your Needs?

When selecting a GPS for your motorcycle, it is worth thinking about how accurate you want your satellite signals to be, in pinpointing your position.

A lot of GPS units available today have an accuracy of approximately 6-8 meters. However, many of the newer GPS models are designed with a WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) capability, resulting in accuracies of 3-4 meters 95% of the time. The Garmin Quest 2 for example, has a flip up external antenna equipped with a 12-channel WAAS GPS receiver; supplying position accuracy of up to 9 feet.

If you enjoy riding in dense woodlands and urban areas, it is worth noting that GPS devices incorporating the new SiRF Star III Chip Set, are units to look out for. This high performance, low power consumption chipset has superior sensitivity in high foliage surroundings. It is also worth noting that GPS units with external powered antennas are great in maintaining a signal in deep woodlands.

Does the Battery Life of Your Motorcycle GPS Suit Your Needs?

With the freedom to ride just about anywhere with a GPS; battery life is an important component to consider. Most GPS units use 2, 4, or 6 'AA' batteries, which can last up to 6 hours. GPS units with integrated rechargeable batteries are the ideal choice if you occasionally lose track of time. With GPS systems like the TomTom RIDER, you can charge your battery at home, while planning your next route, or continuously keep topped up with power, by charging your GPS directly from your bikes battery.

How Resistant Is Your Motorcycle GPS To Vibration & Hard Ware?

With the freedom to ride just about anywhere and not get lost, it is guaranteed your GPS will get a great deal of use (and reverberation). So, it is important to consider how durable your GPS is, in withstanding such conditions.

GPS devices designed exclusively for Motorcycles, like the TomTom RIDER have been designed with this in mind. Not only weather proof, its tough outer case and rugged shock proof mount has been designed to absorb any external friction.

Although most GPS devices come with a mount, it is an absolute must that you use a vibration isolated mount if your GPS will be used regularly on your motorcycle. The RAM mount by NPI, which is fast becoming the industry standard, manufacture anti-vibration ball and socket mounting systems allowing you to mount practically anything, anywhere with vibration protection and durability. This would be an ideal addition to the Garmin Quest 2 GPS if you were purchasing this portable GPS for a lot of use on your motorcycle.

Do You Want Your Motorcycle GPS To Have 2-Way Communication?

Some of the most recent GPS systems to be launched for motorcycles have taken 2-way communication to a whole new level.

If you own a GPRS Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, it is worth knowing that many Sat Nav's, like the TomTom RIDER, have incorporated a Bluetooth receiver, amongst their many features. With the ability to connect your phone via Bluetooth, and receive incoming phone calls through your GPS and Bluetooth headset, you need never have to take your gloves and helmet off to answer your phone again.

You could even use your Bluetooth enabled phones' wireless Internet, and with certain models of GPS, receive real time information on traffic conditions.

Enjoy riding in groups? It is worth knowing there are some recent hand held units that can offer built in radios that will not only allow you to communicate with other members of your group, but will also display everyone's location on your screen.

How Easy Is Your Motorcycle GPS To Update?

With Roads constantly changing, the ability to update your device easily, and at a reasonable cost, are very important factors to consider when selecting your GPS.

It is important to realize that each type of GPS will be updated in a different way, and so you need to choose which process is better for you.

Those which are attached to a PDA, like the Mio A201 for example, are usually updated via a PC, whereas dedicated in-vehicle units tend to be updated via a CD. These have to be purchased from the road map data supplier.

Some specific software vendors have solutions for preparing maps which can be downloaded to your GPS unit. Most notably, TomTom operate the TomTom PLUS service.

The Choice: Budget Considerations

In essence, your choice can be reasonably simple: Buy the most expensive GPS that you can afford, that suits your needs.

It is important, using my pointers above, to decide which features are most important to you. If you want an up-to-the-minute GPS for your motorcycle; with features like real-time, on demand traffic information, hands-free calling, turn by turn voice instructions via bluetooth headsets, alerts for speed camera locations, plus thousands of useful points of interest, GPS sytems like the TomTom RIDER start from approximately £550 inc. VAT.

If, however, you are looking for more of a toy to play with, and a GPS that will simply get you from A to B, then a hand held device could be a better choice. With a range of features, like simple voice guidance, compass mode, MP3 player, and essentially portability, GPS devices like the Mio 268 and the Garmin Quest 2 are ideal for motorcycles, and a range of outdoor activities. The Mio 268, and hand held GPS units with similar features, start from approximately £250 inc. VAT.

How to Submit Digital Pictures for Magazine Publication

Most magazines now accept digital images. The question is will they accept mine!

I won't answer that question I'll leave that to you to answer once you have finished reading this article.

It's only just recently that magazines have decided to accept digital images this is due to the image quality of early digital camera were not man enough for the job i.e. did not produce images with enough resolution and level of detail to reproduce well in magazines. Most Picture Editors on magazines prefer either slides or prints as this is mainly at present habit but is currently changing due to more professional photographers using digital cameras. A good reason your images may not be accepted is if you supply your images already printed, it's OK to do this for your Granny, family or friends it's a no no when submitting to a publication. Why, have a close look at your printed image the picture is made up of tiny dots and lines. When scanned by the repro department they have to blur your image to try to get rid of these dots and lines otherwise your image has a moiré effect so you end up with an image that looks bad. Your best option is to supply your images to the magazine on CD-ROMs again don't use cheap ones they go wrong! You can get approx. 31 images onto a CD of 700mbs if each image is 22mbs in size.

Increase the resolution.

Digital photography and getting your pictures into print is supplying an image to the correct pixel size and resolution in a format that can be easily opened by another computers operating systems. What does that mean, well not everyone uses Microsoft Windows many publishers use Apple Macs some even use Linux if your image can't be viewed IT WILL NOT BE USED!
Many magazines now included brief information on submitting digital photographs in the content section. Have a look at http://www.photographymonthly.com/reqs_details.cfm. To see how to submit images to Photography Monthly. If in doubt, ask. Did you notice they want your image resolution at 300dpi, your camera only takes a picture at 72dpi, how do I know what size my image needs to be at 300dpi. Help is at hand here's a link to a little tool, which will help with image sizes, pixels, colour depth and file size.

http://www.searchhuts.co.uk/portal/version/cpi.asp it free. Its called Commercial Printing Information, there does not seem to be anything thing like this software anywhere else on the internet! Using this software to see what size your image can go to and then you can resize your image accordingly in your normal photo editing software.

Size matters!

The pictures pixel dimensions can be read with the above tool so dimensions of say 3200x2400pixels we would be looking for a file size of about 21mbs this would be OK for a full page. The above program can help you decide what size your image will be OK up to.

Why JPG?

Another problem magazine picture editors come up against is images supplied in a unusual format. To save problems later ALWAYS save images in JPG format. JPG format is optimised for compressing full-colour or grey-scale photographic-type digital images. The reason for using this format is that any computer system can open JPG images. Remember, not everybody uses Microsoft's Windows, many magazine publishers' use Apple Macs and some people are using Linux systems. Regardless of the system used all will read JPEG files.

Submitting work.

When submitting work remember to include your name & address with a brief synopsis of what is on the CD together with a high quality printout of your images and the file names of the images, this can be easily done in PhotoShop by going to File > Automate > contact sheet. Find the folder your images are in pick your paper size and number of images on each sheet of paper. Please remember someone has to look at these images so small images get a thumbs down as does too many. Don't forget to stick a DO NOT BEND label on the envelope as CDs don't like being bent.

New words we have learnt

Moiré effect - A moiré pattern is the combination of two or more patterns viewed at the same time.

DPI stands for dots per inch and is used with resolution
JPG or JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group is the name of the committee that designed the photographic image-compression standard.

Do's and Don'ts of submitting your Digital Pictures

Do's

Do Make sure your images are to the correct pixel size and resolution.

Do Make sure you send a contact sheet of the images on the CD together with file names.

Do save in JPG format.

Do clearly name image files on CD-ROM.

Do use high quality ink and photo paper for contact sheets.

Do turn off time/date stamp, as it's difficult to remove and takes time.

Do enclose return postage if you require your bits back

Do e-mail if you are unsure of what is required or how files should be submitted

Don't

Don't e-mail huge unsolicited images

Don't over sharpen images

Don't send hundreds of images - be selective, send only pictures to do with that publication (*see below).

Don't send pictures of different subject matter unless requested

Don't use cheap blank CD-ROM's, paper or ink.

Don't send expensive storage media i.e. the card from your camera

Don't use long file names remember, not everybody uses Microsoft's Windows.

Don't use 3rd party software on your CD's to try to display your images when viewed.

*If the magazine is say an aircraft magazine don't send irrelevant images of an say landscapes, animals etc... Stick to the magazine subject.
